UK prepares for power cuts after solar warning.

The Independant

The bad news is the Sun has unleashed its strongest flare in four years. Solar flares are caused by the sudden release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun's atmosphere. National power grids could overheat, homes and business premises could be without electricity. Life as we know it will disapear and 'Eastenders' will will be cancelled...

The good news is we’re likely to be the only house on the road with appliances working (during daylight hours) if the projected ‘Solar storm’ hits the UK and causes power cuts.

Solar storms do not affect solar pv panels.

The solar storm consists of a blast of charged particles, X rays and plasma not visible light.Solar panels work on converting visible light to electricity, all those satellites up there are powered by solar panels.

Bring it on......

  1. a little more to the point when you have a power cut I'm afraid that your panels will stop working to. Irony

    1. With hindsight I realise this piece was totally wrong....
Common sense should have warned me that it would be very dangerous for engineers to have isolated a fault from the national grid, only to be electrocuted by power coming in the opposite direction from a solar panelled household. In a power cut your PV panels will not produce any electricity.
      My apologies for the confusion.
